Day 12 of 30 Days of Biking

Today's ride (actually yesterday's ride because I was lazy and never got around to writing this yesterday) was a new personal achievement: I climbed the east side of Novelty Hill Road.

Allegedly, the east side of Novelty Hill climbs gains ~423 feet in ~0.8 mile, with an average grade of ~9.6% (and a maximum of ~15%). I incorporated this into a newly designated (by me) 12 mile training loop beginning and ending at my house. With the climb up & over Old Woodinville Road, the big rollies along West Snoqualmie Valley Road NE, plus the ~100 feet or so it takes to get from my house to the main road, the total climb was more than 1000' for the 12 mile ride. Not to shabby.

I've biked up the west side of Novelty Hill many times, but never before attempted the east side. I was always a bit intimidated by it; I feared (or, even worse, knew) that I was not in good enough shape to climb it successfully.

I can now say, 100% certainty, that I am indeed just barely in good enough shape to climb the east side of Novelty Hill.
